Check Out Max's Interview With Mike Pettine
Loyal GGN reader and commenter Max Strauss landed a 30 minute audio interview with Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. You can read or listen to it on his site, Pro Interviews.
Pettine has a lot of interesting comments. Here's a sample:
MS : Which group, like line, linebackers, and secondary do you think has improved the most this offseason?
MP : Well, I just think, I’d probably have to say defensive backs because of the upgrade in personnel. We feel that Brodney is going to do a great job for us, he stepped right in, in the spring, and picked things up right away. Then, Antonio Cromartie just has the ability to have a guy who’s been to the Pro Bowl, had 12 interceptions in a year, and his type of man cover skills which is just a tremendous thing for us to add that we have a guy that plays, you know there are different styles of defense, and he’s not well-suited to be an off the ball, zone corner, and in our style, it’s get up in your face, take advantage of that first five yard contact rule we have, and let’s lock guys down. We’re fortunate that we have guys that can play man coverage and we drafted one also in Kyle Wilson. We think he has a chance to be a real good player as well. So I just think the backend has not only, we’ve upgraded personnel-wise, but just a good spring too, just as far as the communication back there. That was one of our issues last year when we gave up some negative plays, a lot of times it wasn’t necessarily what our opponent did, it was a mistake that we made. That was a big part of our offseason, was addressing those issues, and look at it, hey, we’ve given up plays. There are times in this league, where you’ll say listen, ‘That was a good throw, good catch, nothing you can do.’ But, there were a lot of times where the wounds that we had were self-inflicted.

Coles' Role: More Mentor Than Anything?

As Matt told us earlier today, Laveranues Coles appears primed for a third tour of duty with the Jets. Two years ago he entered camp as the number one receiver on the roster. After some key additions and a pair of down years, LC will sit fourth on the roster.
While he seems to be in decline, Coles does seem to be a better option in the slot the first four weeks of the year than Brad Smith, David Clowney, or Aundrae Allison. His production is still passable for a third option.
After that point things become less clear, though. It's tough to see where he really fits on the roster. He's not much of a special teams player. He won't see much time in conventional sets with Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, or Jerricho Cotchery on the roster. I don't think he'll even get playing time in four receiver sets. Dustin Keller will probably outpace him there.
He will be there for depth. I wonder if the Jets are looking to have him take guys like Edwards and Holmes under his wing. Both guys have had some off field issues in their careers, and New York can be an easy place to find trouble. Maybe the Jets want him to teach those guys how to conduct matters off the field. If Laveranues understands his on field opportunities will be limited and truly buys into the role, I could see him having a real positive effect.
Then again, maybe they're just waiting for Holmes to come back before letting LC go.
Jets Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Let's take a quick look at the resume of former Jet free safety Kerry Rhodes.
Yes, it's true, he invented New Coke. And certainly, he was the one who began global warming. And while you may believe it was Jim Joyce, it actually was Kerry Rhodes who blew the call in Armando Galarraga's imperfect game for the Detroit Tigers.
OK, so Rhodes wasn't responsible for any of this. But if you listen to some of the Jets, you could be excused for believing he was. Evidently, many of their ills last season were due to the photogenic free safety, who was traded to Arizona in March after falling out of favor with the coaching staff.
Rhodes' relationship with the coaching staff, particularly defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and secondary coach Dennis Thurman, turned contentious...
Erik Ainge Placed on Non-Football Illness List
Along with the rookies, the quarterbacks and select veterans were at Florham Park today, and Manish Mehta of the Daily News reports that backup QB Erik Ainge has been listed as a reserve non-football illness, which means he won't count against the 80-man roster. Apparently, he had some sort of illness which the team chose not to disclose.
Meanwhile, as John B. posted, RB Joe McKnight is apparently not in football shape and is on the active non-football injury list, which means he is occupying a roster spot.
Mehta also shares that backup QB Kevin O'Connell will not soon be released, as he has been told that he will have an opportunity to compete.
And it turns out that the other linebackers are better than Ezra, as Butler has been cut, and S Emanuel Cook has been signed. Butler, who wore #53, was limited during OTAs in the spring. Cook was with the team briefly last year.
As for numbers, David Wyatt mentioned that OLB Bryan Thomas will now be #58. That number was previously worn by LB Josh Mauga, who was mostly on and off the practice squad last year.
CORRECTION: I wrote earlier that Ainge was on non-football injury, but the actual designation is non-football illness. I don't think it makes much of a difference as far as these lists go though, as McKnight isn't actually injured either.

Joe McKnight Fails Conditioning Run

as per Jane McManus of ESPN New York:
Notably, RB Joe McKnight failed his conditioning run and won't practice with the team until he passes it. He was placed on the active non-football injury list.
Now I'm starting to wonder what the deal is. It was one thing when it was happening in some minicamp. Now he's had plenty of time to learn from it and correct it.
Let's not go overboard. This is small potatoes at this point. This just isn't the news anybody wanted to see. This probably jumped from nonissue to mild concern.

NY Jets Training Camp Preview
That's it my friends, there is no gray area, this team is loaded for bear and the mandate is crystal clear. Rex Ryan is telling anyone who will listen, this team expects to win the Super Bowl this year.
They don't want to win it. They don't hope to win it. He expects to win it, and to a man his players are drinking the kool aid.
